Yo-Yo Ma! The Grammy award winning renowned cellist was here and he put our souls at ease at the Kenya National Theatre on June 7, 2023 leaving those who attended forever enchanted.
Born on October 7, 1955, Yo-Yo Ma is a musical prodigy who has captivated audiences with his exceptional skill and dedication. He was raised in Paris to Chinese parents where he embarked on his musical journey at the tender age of four and a half, displaying remarkable talent from the very beginning. He continued his quest to hone his craft in New York at institutions such as the renowned Julliard School. With a career spanning decades, Yo-Yo Ma has established himself as one of the world’s most renowned cellists. He has graced the stages of prestigious venues and performed as a soloist with orchestras around the globe. The resonance of his 1733 Montagnana cello has echoed in concert halls, captivating audiences with its rich and soul-stirring tones.
Back in 2018 the maestro himself, Yo-Yo Ma, embarked on a musical adventure of a lifetime. He challenged himself to perform Bach’s 6 Cello Suites – one of the oldest and most challenging pieces of cello literature – in 36 cities across the six continents. For his denouement, after captivating audiences around the globe, Yo-Yo Ma chose Nairobi as the grand finale of this extraordinary feat and spectacular it was!
As the doors swung open, the audience settled into magnificent courtyard, a palpable sense of anticipation filled the air as the clock ticked closer to 6pm and the magic of Yo-Yo Ma’s performance drew nearer. The concert was an odyssey of musical enchantment, as he poured his heart and soul into each note, allowing the ancient compositions of Bach’s 6 Cello Suites to weave a tapestry of emotion and awe. As the curtain fell and the final note faded, Yo-Yo Ma’s epic musical marathon has reached its conclusion. Those fortunate enough to witness this monumental occasion will forever carry the memories of that enchanted evening. They were transported to a realm where time stood still, where the beauty of music held sway, and where Yo-Yo Ma’s masterful performance left an indelible mark on their souls.
And the excitement doesn’t end there! After the main performance, the audience grooved to the beats of the incredible Muthoni Drummer Queen and the ever-talented DJ Suraj. These special performances kept the energy high and the celebration of culture and music alive long into the night. For this amazing experience, I would pay anything!
