BRAND SPOTLIGHT: Uncover Skincare

Uncover Skincare is all about African women authentically being themselves; uncovered. They want to uncover the mum, athlete, career woman in you with confidence and pride in your skin, and it all begins with self-care.

Melanated skin is distinctively different with completely different dermatological requirements from non-melanated skin. As one of Kenya’s fastest growing Skincare brands, Uncover realises this and is on a mission to create products with women of colour as a priority and not an afterthought. Uncover harnesses advanced K-Beauty skincare technology and African Botanicals to meet the specific skincare needs for women of colour.

Founded by three female partners [Sneha Mehta, Jade Oyateru and Catherine Lee] with a passion for African beauty, the skincare brand seeks to empower women not just with great product but arm them with information on how to take care of their skin to ensure no woman loses confidence over easily avoidable or reversible skin conditions. They offer a free personalized Skin Quiz on their website where you can get information on your skin type and the skin care routine that can work for you. Not to mention, skin consultation services from a professional esthetician.

Starting with a range of two products – their [now-famous] Uncover Sheet Masks and the I Am Spotless Pimple Patch, Uncover recently unveiled their first bottled product, The Baobab Glow-C Serum. The serum includes a blend of premium and potent ingredients that have been researched for their effectiveness towards evening and brightening your overall skin tone including 8% Vitamin C, 2% Arbutin and African Baobab Extract. Baobab contains anti-inflammatory properties that can alleviate irritation and is packed with natural Vitamin C. Arbutin, contained in the serum, is known to brighten skin discolouration and Vitamin C is an antioxidant that promotes collagen production whilst protecting the skin from environmental stressors. An Airless Pump Technology is used for their Baobab Glow-C Serum to protect the formulation from oxidizing due to likely heat and light exposure in Kenya, thus retaining the utmost stability for Vitamin C efficacy and results on your skin.

“We have been carefully crafting this Vitamin C Serum for 2 years, working with our team of expert formulation scientists in some of Korea’s most cutting-edge labs. In our mission to create skincare where women of colour are a priority and not an afterthought, we worked closely with women across Kenya to co-create this product, from receiving valuable packaging feedback to testing the Baobab Glow-C Serum formula and adapting it accordingly,” notes Jade Oyateru, Uncover Co-Founder & COO.

The brand’s popular sheet masks are an age-old practice from Korea. The masks are dunked in serum which contains niacinamide which is primarily known for getting rid of acne, minimizing pores, fading dark spots and hydrating the skin and come three variants; Green Tea, Vitamin C and Aloe Vera to detoxify, brighten and sooth your skin respectively, depending on your immediate needs.

Wondering what the pimple patch is? It is a clear, transparent, hydrocolloid patch that is also infused with salicylic acid, a key acne fighting ingredient. The hydrocolloid sucks out the contents of the pimple and heals it faster therefore reducing scarring. To use, simply stick on a ripened pimple, protecting it from external pollutants, and since its transparent, you can put it on and go about your day.

Fun Fact: Uncover Skincare is the first brand to launch and market a pimple patch in the Kenyan Market.

AS Uncover continues to formulate new products, you should look out for multiple products launching before the end of this year including a cleanser, toner and moisturizer to give you a complete skincare routine.
