The initiative, curated by Development Reimagined, was designed to facilitate trade and cultural exchange between African designers and the Chinese market.
The energy at Shanghai Fashion Week Autumn/Winter 2025 took on a distinctly African flair as the continent made a bold and impactful appearance at the event. Through a pioneering initiative titled Africa Reimagined, 21 fashion brands from 10 countries converged in China’s fashion capital to showcase the creativity, craftsmanship, and contemporary spirit of African design.

The initiative, curated by Development Reimagined with support from Afreximbank was designed to facilitate trade and cultural exchange between African designers and the Chinese market. Held as part of the “Africa Reimagined Showroom,” the collective participation marked a bold new chapter in Africa’s fashion narrative – one rooted not only in aesthetic innovation but in economic empowerment and cross-continental collaboration.
Redefining African Luxury for a Global Audience
From richly layered textiles and intricate beadwork to clean tailoring and eco-conscious materials, the collections on show defied outdated stereotypes of African fashion. These designers brought with them a fresh, modern aesthetic that still remained deeply connected to heritage, tradition, and storytelling.
Designers from South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, and beyond unveiled collections that seamlessly blended Afrofuturism, indigenous techniques, sustainable innovation, and contemporary design. Audiences at the showcase were captivated by the depth and diversity of the collections—each reflecting the unique identity and culture of its origin while resonating with a global audience.
Fashion insiders, international media, buyers, and Chinese creatives flocked to the showroom to engage with the designers, explore textiles, and better understand the stories behind each piece. For many, it was a rare opportunity to experience African fashion directly, beyond the lens of Western interpretation.

Building Bridges: Why China? Why Now?
China represents a rapidly growing market for luxury and lifestyle products, including fashion. As Chinese consumers increasingly seek authentic, ethically produced, and culturally rich designs, African fashion – with its blend of sustainability, heritage, and narrative – offers exactly that.
“Africa Reimagined” is not just about showcasing garments. It’s about repositioning Africa in the Chinese market. Not as a resource provider but as a creator of value and culture. The Shanghai Fashion Week debut is part of a broader strategy to unlock new economic pathways for African businesses and increase the visibility of African excellence in high-value industries.
This partnership is significant for both continents: while African designers gain access to the Chinese market, Chinese audiences gain exposure to Africa’s design philosophies, textile heritage, and cultural innovation.
The Designers Who Stole the Spotlight
From internationally acclaimed names to rising stars, the lineup featured a curated mix of the continent’s most promising design voices including Masa Mara, Imprint South Africa, Mantsho, Molebatsi, Rich Mnisi and David Tlale from South Africa, Taibo Bacar from Mozambique, Kiko Romeo and Katush from Kenya, Anissa Mpungwe from Tanzania, Mafi Mafi and Afropian from Ethiopia, Awa Meite from Mali, Ejiro Amos Tafiri, Pepper Row, Orange Culture and Bloke from Nigeria, Kente Gentlemen from Cote d’Ivoire, Adama Paris from Senegal and Judy Sanderson from Portugal.
