One of the most exciting aspects of Iyanu is its all-African voice cast, ensuring that the story remains authentic to its cultural roots.
The world of animation is about to be enriched with a powerful new addition, as ‘Iyanu: Child of Wonder’ debuts on Cartoon Network on April 5 and Max on April 6. Rooted in Nigerian mythology, the animated series is set to introduce global audiences to a breathtaking universe inspired by Yoruba culture, folklore, and history.
Bringing African Mythology to Global Screens
Created by Roye Okupe, a Nigerian filmmaker and writer, Iyanu: Child of Wonder is an adaptation of his best-selling graphic novel of the same name. The series is produced by Lion Forge Entertainment, known for championing diversity in animation, and brings to life a compelling story steeped in African heritage.
Set in the mythical kingdom of Yorubaland, Iyanu follows the journey of a young orphan girl who discovers that she possesses divine powers. As she embarks on a mission to uncover the truth about her origins, she becomes a beacon of hope in a land plagued by darkness. Her journey is filled with magic, action, and self-discovery, making it a thrilling adventure for audiences of all ages.
A Major Step for African Representation in Animation
One of the most exciting aspects of Iyanu is its all-African voice cast, ensuring that the story remains authentic to its cultural roots. This move highlights the growing recognition of African talent in the global entertainment space. The production team has been deliberate in assembling a cast that brings genuine representation and richness to the storytelling.
The release of Iyanu marks a significant moment in the animation industry. While African folklore has inspired numerous Hollywood films, there has been a lack of authentic African-led storytelling in major animated productions. Iyanu changes that narrative by putting African culture at the forefront, allowing young viewers – especially from the African diaspora – to see themselves reflected in the world of animation.
While Iyanu will premiere on Cartoon Network and Max for American audiences, it has also secured a major distribution deal for Africa. From June 13, Iyanu will be available on Showmax, allowing viewers across 44 African countries to experience this groundbreaking series firsthand.

Final Thoughts
With its rich storytelling, breathtaking animation, and cultural authenticity, Iyanu: Child of Wonder is set to become a landmark series that celebrates African heritage while appealing to a global audience. Its success could pave the way for more African-inspired stories to make their way into mainstream media, affirming that the future of animation is diverse, inclusive, and deeply rooted in the world’s many cultures.
“It has been a hero’s journey for Roye and the team to bring this ambitious and stunning series to Cartoon Network and Max,” said Michael Ouweleen, President of Cartoon Network and Adult Swim. “This April, we all get to benefit from years of their effort and enter the super unique world they have created, filled with magic, mysterious enemies and divine powers.”
We’re definitely geared up for Iyanu’s highly anticipated debut.
